NJ LEEP – Legal Education Manager

This is a full-time position responsible for all legal education at NJ LEEP. This position includes direct student engagement, program development, and administration. This position requires a Juris Doctor.

The Legal Education Manager oversees all aspects of NJ LEEP’s Legal Education Program, including Constitutional Law Debates, the Summer Law Institute and supporting with Attorney Mentor recruitment and management. Additionally, the Legal Education Manager will oversee NJ LEEP’s student judiciary body – Honor Council. NJ LEEP is seeking qualified candidates to make a significant impact in our community, as well as being capable of significant growth in the role and the organization.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Debate Program

  • Oversee all Legal Education programming and Legal Education events
  • Teach Debate Review and Legal Writing four days per week, from 4:00 to 6:00 PM
  • Create lesson plans and refine content for all Debate Review and Legal Writing classes
  • Implement and refine Legal Education programmatic processes and procedures (e.g., Appellate brief grading and review, homework and quiz grading, etc.)
  • Create and maintain a positive and energetic culture surrounding legal education among the NJ LEEP community
  • Review and provide feedback on all student content – briefs, oral arguments, etc. – for the Legal Education Program

Student Engagement

  • Actively build positive, supportive relationships with NJ LEEP students, particularly those enrolled in Law-Related Education programs
  • Through relationships with students, actively seek to build strong academic and personal habits and skills
  • Other programming duties as assigned

Attorney Mentor Program

  • Support recruitment sessions and individual recruitment phone calls with Attorney Mentors
  • Implement and refine training for Attorney Mentors
  • Support the facilitation of mentor-mentee relationships
  • Collaborate with NJ LEEP Development team to engage Mentors at and outside of NJ LEEP events
  • Act as primary contact point with NJ LEEP Mentors on student-centered issues

Summer Law Institute

  • Create entirely new curriculum for the 2019 Summer Law Institute (SLI)
  • Administer all aspects of NJ LEEP’s Summer Law Institute, including instruction, conduct, and family communication
  • Hire and train seasonal Summer Law Institute Coordinators and college interns
  • Teach and support five week SLI course on criminal justice and criminal trials with a focus on trial advocacy and criminal procedure
  • Lead the process for selecting students from Summer Law Institute to participate in the College Bound Program
  • Support recruitment for Summer Law Institute on school visits, guest speaking at schools and other recruitment activities, in partnership with Program Coordinator

Academic Support and Honor Council

  • Oversee execution of Honor Council – a student-led mechanism for enforcement of institutional values, expectations and culture
  • Refine vision and process for Honor Council
  • Work with other programming staff to identify students for participation on Honor Council, as well as helping to define student-referral process
  • Manage the implementation of Personal Improvement Plans for students referred to Honor Council

SKILLS AND CHARACTERISTICS:

  • Bachelors and JD required.
  • Ability to build and maintain strong relationships
  • An understanding of the obstacles faced by first-generation and low-income students while pursuing a college education across various types of higher learning institutions (private, public, community college)
  • Experience in program initiation, management, execution and refinement
  • Experience working in an urban education setting or community-based organization preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to multitask effectively and expertly prioritize
  • Strong attention to detail and organizational excellence and the willingness to take initiative in order to drive results
  • Professional and positive attitude with a willingness to contribute to a positive staff dynamic
  • Experience in educational program management; experience with program management at NJ LEEP preferred.
  • Well-developed emotional intelligence skills and ability to build and maintain strong relationships.
  • Excellent and nuanced communication skills.
  • The ability to work in a fast paced, high expectations environment.
  • The ability to conceptualize, implement and execute comprehensive systems, and accompanying data tracking instruments.
  • Belief in NJ LEEP mission and philosophy.
